Eligible for Aadhaar Card
Indian Citizens (Residents)
Any Indian citizen (including infants, children, and senior citizens) who resides in India can apply for an Aadhaar card.
No age restriction – even newborns can get Aadhaar.
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
NRIs holding an Indian passport can apply for Aadhaar immediately upon arrival in India.
NRIs must have an Indian passport to apply.
NRIs are now eligible without needing to stay in India for 182 days (as per the 2019 amendment).
Foreigners & Resident Foreign Nationals
Foreigners who are legally residing in India for at least 182 days (6 months) in the past 12 months can apply.
This includes foreign students, work visa holders, and long-term residents in India.
Aadhaar does NOT grant citizenship – it is just an identity document.
❌ Not Eligible for Aadhaar Card
Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) Cardholders
OCI cardholders are NOT eligible for Aadhaar.
OCI is a long-term visa status, but it does not grant Indian residency or citizenship.
OCIs should use their OCI card and foreign passport for identification in India.
Foreigners on Short-Term Visits
Tourists, business travelers, or short-term visa holders (less than 6 months stay in India) are NOT eligible.
Even if they have an Indian visa, they do not qualify unless they meet the 182-day rule.
PIO (Persons of Indian Origin) Cardholders
PIOs are not eligible unless they have an Indian passport and qualify as NRIs.
